Stainless Steel Grades Chart: EN, AISI and Chemical Composition
Selected stainless steel grades with EN-based reference compositions and common type and UNS references. Cross-references do not guarantee equivalence.
Selected EN-based reference compositions, in mass %. The EN tables retain the reference basis EN 10088-2:2014 and EN 10095, as applicable; check the current product standard and edition required for your order. This abbreviated chart is for orientation, not a complete purchase specification. Common type and UNS references are not guaranteed equivalents. A dash means not listed here, not zero; several elements and standard footnotes are omitted. Values marked β€ are maxima. Verify the full ordered specification and inspection certificate for the supplied product.

Important grade-reference notes
[1] Stabilization criteria vary with the product standard and grade variant, including Ti/Nb and C/N relationships. The EN-reference expressions shown do not replace the ordered ASTM or product-standard requirements.
[2] The 409 family includes distinct UNS variants. The displayed EN-reference chemistry does not guarantee S40910 compliance.
[3] S31803 and S32205 are not identical; S32205 has narrower chemistry limits. The displayed EN ranges are not S32205 limits. Confirm dual certification for the supplied product.
[4] ASTM 309S/S30908 and 310S/S31008 require C β€0.08%; the EN-reference maxima displayed here differ. Specify and verify the required standard and grade. EN 1.4828 is not automatically equivalent to ASTM 309/S30900.
[5] Type 420 is associated with several EN carbon variants; this table shows 1.4021 specifically.
Additional grade references: 309, 440A and 440C
The following abbreviated compositions follow ASTM A276 (bars and shapes), not the EN basis of the tables above. EN counterparts are deliberately not assigned. These references do not imply stock availability; omitted elements and product requirements must be checked.
| Common type/reference | UNS | C | Cr | Ni | Mo | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 309 | S30900 | β€0.20 | 22β24 | 12β15 | β | ASTM A276 |
| 440A | S44002 | 0.60β0.75 | 16β18 | β | β€0.75 | ASTM A276 |
| 440C | S44004 | 0.95β1.20 | 16β18 | β | β€0.75 | ASTM A276 |
Reference standards: EN 10088-2 and EN 10095 for the tables above; ASTM A240/A240M for 309S, 310S, S31803 and S32205 (notes 3 and 4); ASTM A276/A276M for 309, 440A and 440C.
How to read EN and AISI grade names
The EN number, such as 1.4301, identifies the steel grade. In an EN name such as X5CrNi18-10, X denotes high-alloy steel and the following numbers indicate nominal chemistry; they are not the permitted limits for an individual heat. Common type names and UNS designations are useful references but do not establish interchangeable specifications. State the product standard, edition, grade and delivery condition on your order.
Choosing a grade in short
- 1.4301/1.4307 (304/304L): commonly considered for food equipment, process equipment and general fabrication; suitability depends on the application.
- 1.4404 (316L): improved corrosion resistance over 304 in many environments. Suitability depends on chlorides, temperature, pH, deposits and crevices, fabrication and service conditions. Do not assume suitability for seawater immersion.
- 1.4016 (430): ferritic grade commonly used for appliances and interior applications.
- 1.4509 (441) and 1.4512 (409L): grades used in selected exhaust and heat-exchanger applications; confirm temperature, corrosion and fabrication requirements.
- 1.4521 (444): a ferritic option for selected applications, subject to corrosion, forming, welding and mechanical requirements. Substitution for 316L requires application-specific assessment.
- 1.4462 (2205): combines high strength with corrosion resistance for suitable applications; specify the required EN/UNS grade and product standard.
